A warm welcome to you. My name is Paul and I am a person-centred counsellor and Internal Family Systems Therapist. I work online, in Brighton and London. I live by the sea which I love and find really calming and relaxing and am passionate about creativity, especially music and comedy.

I appreciate working with people and I know how much courage it takes to come into counselling. I am aware that one size does not fit all, and my aim is to meet people where they are as I believe in recognising each person’s uniquely different needs and wants. Above all I believe the most important part of counselling is the connection that is formed between the client and the therapist while acknowledging and welcoming all backgrounds, races, cultures, classes, orientations and identities. I am also half Irish and half English and am aware of how these parts influence my life.  I have worked in many diverse communities through my housing career and my work with charities and I appreciate how importance it is to honour and welcome difference.

My aim is to build a relationship with the individual where they can feel safe and build a sense of trust. I truly believe that the answers lie within the person and I aim to provide the environment to allow for this.

About me

As well as counselling people, I also work for a hospice where I run a volunteer programme which provides befriending for patients in palliative care, who can benefit from companionship. I supervise volunteers, run support groups and story-telling sessions and am also involved in assessing people for the counselling service. This has given me a depth of awareness about the needs that people have at different times. I feel that patience and attention to detail is a big key to supporting others.

Prior to this I worked for two London-based charities supporting young adults between 18-25 with social, emotional and mental health needs. It was there I ran a service to engage mentors for young people and facilitated confidence-building workshops to help set up life-goals and apprenticeships. Previous to that I had a career in housing, where I supported Housing Associations across the UK giving trainings, assessing data and finding ways to help them run efficiently.

My Approach

I am a person-centred counsellor which was developed by Carl Rogers which means I hope
to create an atmosphere of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard. My wish is to facilitate an atmosphere where the individual feels completely supported and heard. I am also an Internal Family Systems Therapist. IFS is an evidence base, trauma informed system developed by Dick Schwartz. This method has a deep component which believes we all have a part of ourselves called the “Self” which is always whole and healthy.

Why therapy?

It may well be that you have had some changes in your life like a job change or a relationship difficulty and would like a safe place to talk. Or it could be that you wish to do some deeper processing of issues that are affecting you.
You might want to look at your addictive processes. I am familiar with 12 step recovery and am very comfortable working with people with addictions. I have trained with Cece Sykes who is an expert in using IFS with addictions. I am also very aware about how therapy can support the recovery process.
